The FOMO Factor
FOMO - Fear Of Missing Out
Even before Facebook, Instagram, Twitter era, many people who use to travel overseas for leisure, use to click photos, return home and share their amazing travel stories flaunting photos for months in their social circle. Dinners, lunches, kitty parties were specially organized to show off. Been there Done that (BTDT) was a common phrase and a motivator which would serve as a big emotional satisfier of ego, image, status, popularity, respect, that would enhance a sense of accomplishment, which fostered confidence as well as security and served as a big mark of success.
With the world economy treading hockey curve, many people upgraded to the rich bracket. New Innovations, business models in the travel industry, and demand and supply dynamics resulted in Declining travel costs and increasing accessibility plus affordability. With the advent of Facebook and other social media trends, the BTDT motivator rose exponentially and more people expressed their great desire to show off their expeditions even more by posting photos and using an expression "Been There Done That", Paris, Eiffel Tower -Tick, London, Big Ben -Tick.
Group tours which would pack the whole of West Europe in 15 days with all the famous cities included in the itinerary and many famous spots included and many activities at those famous spots sold as extras so that a tour operator could make some money out of those value-added sales.
BTDT for the special interest tour operators this was a big cash factor, even today it is somewhat a big reason for tourism for new bloomers and these kinds of tours still run successfully.

However the information is a king today, everywhere there is information, media creates sensation and the recent developments and intensifying of discussion on global warming and the melting glaciers, there is a panic that the earth is dying and the world will soon be coming to an end, this fear has created two tourism trends 1) desire for seeing quickly all that will be gone and 2) quest to see other planets or live in space stations before we are gone. This is due to the fear of missing out (FOMO). Do it before they are gone or before we are gone, so maybe some years down the line to the generations to come, we could tell some stories that once upon a time there were glaciers, there were penguins and we saw them they were so beautiful but now they are gone. So now there is a thirst like never before to visit those places and see those species which are endangered and may not exist in a few years. Humanity fears that they will miss out on those things if they don't do them now. People have money now to be able to do that and before the money is gone they want to enjoy, and those people who said fear was a demotivator to enjoyment have all been wronged. Now fear is one of the travel motivators inter and intra-galactical.
